Even Scorpions Can Be Pack Animals (Kyuranger fic)

Summary:

A small dynamic exploration of Garu and Stinger, as they don't directly interact much but both find the comfort and support of being apart of the team deeply important to them and moving forward from their respective losses.

Despite the way he spoke and seemed to carry himself on first impression, Garu was not one to shy away from showing his emotions openly and unabashedly. Oftentimes his passion and his anger took forefront, but equally so he expressed his love and concern as well even if in a bit of a quieter way. Garu was a wolfman, the last of them, and though he had lost his first pack he was swept up into a new one amidst his grief. They were fewer in number and didn’t always get along or understand each other as easily due to their differences, but their unique traits and personalities defined his new family and he wouldn't want them any other way.

He was most often to lean into showing his more affectionate side with Lucky through his open support both reassuring and in harsh moments of knocking sense back into his leader. For every “Grit your teeth!” there was equally a pat to the back or a headbutt to the shoulder when they were close enough. For every seconded vote or decision, there was a willingness to stand firm against the others' doubt and unfair calls. It was a balance that worked for them, and Garu was ever thankful he met Lucky that day by, well, luck and he was even more so glad that Lucky had so firmly and quickly stolen his heart and gained his trust.

Speaking of balance, the mechanical organism of namesake was another Garu has begrudgingly come to find himself more noticeably comfortable with. Balance was quite frankly a cheeky little thing, and they delighted in prodding and teasing those both enemy and others of the crew. Of course it wasn't as mean spirited when with their little family, but all the same it made Garu’s hackles raise and his lips peel back in a frustrated snarl as he fell into Balance’s sway every time without fail. It was like a bit of a two step really that Balance always anticipated, because the song and dance of the two bickering and joking and reacting was how the gold ranger showed their love in return. And when Garu had figured out such, it seemed only right then not to stop their little exchanges. Besides, having someone he could yell at like that and it all be without any true hurt or malintent at all was a bit freeing, it felt like no matter what they knew what lines to never cross and they would always be friends afterwards.

Some of the other members had yet to really establish a specific dynamic with the wolfman but that didn't make his love and loyalty any less for his pack members. If he could help, he did. If he would simply offer them someone to talk to, he listened and gave advice as he could. If his fur proved soft enough to help someone relax, he grit his own teeth and let the others run fingers through his pelt and even rest against him for naps with him keeping vigil as they soaked up his heat. He wasn’t always the best at all his attempts, but he liked to think he made up for it in earnestness.

For some like Hammie, he knew she saw him as her team member but not her family, though she could and would always trust that Garu would be there to help her in any situation. And to the far other side was Spada who saw everyone he trusted as his family due to his family being so intrinsically how he views his love and care, even to the point of probably not considering many at all as friends in that sense. He would return his family’s trust and affections by caring and providing for them like he did his siblings, and Garu always made sure to express his gratitude for something so sacred to his yellow clad kyoudai. Champ was….hard to place, since though he cared deeply for all of them, separating program and mission from emotions was a bit harder to parce. Garu read all of it as his family member and thus equally important, but there were times he was definitely reminded the other had been built not made, programmed not taught, but he all the same with gusto fought and laughed alongside the bull.

Naga was…..trying, over eager at times even it seemed, enough to even throw Garu off on occasion. The silver haired boy had a burning passion and desperation to express himself and in kind see how others did so in return, wanting so badly to be able to understand the emotions those around him displayed. Garu had been told he had no emotions, but that was far from the case to him. Rather, he had never been given a guide for them so they had been confused and repressed, and now that he had people to share them with, they tended to come out all at once and not always in the correct way.

Naga was not against physical affection, but he didn't quite understand the impact it should have since he seemed muted towards really anyone touching or even manhandling him a bit. So though Garu was happy the other was comfortable returning hugs and patting his head and high fiving, he struggled to find ways that seemed to really stick out and affect the other in particular. He could tell Naga wanted the same even if the silver ranger in question didn't understand how to articulate that, so for now all Garu could do was encourage him and enjoy every attempted smile and every overly honest sentiment spoken to him.

His other main source of struggle was with their more distant member, Stinger. Stinger stuck out for a lot of reasons, but to Garu the most defining one was his loneliness; Stinger never outright avoided jovial moments with the others and had outright before earnestly given his care and aid outside his line of duty, everything he does watching over Kotaro being a prime example. But if he thought nobody was paying him attention or if he let his mind wander too much, one could note the distant tired look in his features and the weight on his shoulders it seemed almost forcing him to make himself smaller and more compact to bear it all. Lucky from the start had said he put his trust in Stinger, and he had gone out of his way to try and make the other comfortable, but Lucky wasn't the most perceptive all the time and also tended to spread himself a little thin attention wise if things weren't brought to him directly. Garu on the other hand, was no leader most of the time, and had the means and opportunity to make the younger man’s sadness his business.

Garu and a few others had ended up watching the ship this time, losing out on the kyulette, and as today’s mission was of a more laid back nature of reconnaissance the rest of the “home team” had taken to their rooms to relax on their own time. Garu had stayed in the main meeting and observation deck for some time simply doing some workout stretches and reps before making to follow suite of the others’ idea, but as he was making his way down the hallway of private quarters for the ship, a soft sound behind one of the doors caught his attention. His interest piqued, he stopped where he was, letting his ears twitch and swivel to better isolate the sound and pick out what room it was coming from. He waited a few moments, sure he had heard something but he couldn’t quite-....gasping, that’s what it was; someone was taking in air with a greed like they’d never breathed before this moment so they had to make up for lost time.

Garu sniffed at the air, moving towards the right side of the hallway where the sound was seeming to come from. He could smell something a bit pungent though not overly so, with some sweeter undertones; it was some kind of bodily odor scent, meaning the possibilities were narrowed down quite a bit: The rooms down that side went in order of Champ, Balance, Naga, and Stinger. Champ and Balance don't have any organic scents on them due to being mechanical in nature, and Naga went out on today’s mission which only left one option. With his target found, Garu began approaching the door on the end with interest and a bit of concern.

He was going to just directly knock on the door and ask about the other man, which was admittedly not likely the best plan at all, when just a few steps shy of his destination the door slid open and Stinger almost stumbled past the doorway. Garu was quick to take a few steps back, his paw pads dampening the sound as Stinger just stood there looking at the floor, reaching out to hold onto the door frame as if for support. Garu froze, just staring at Stinger unsure what to do as he tried and failed to come up with something natural to ask. Having his pack member so close though, Garu was relieved to hear his breathing a little better, but he still looked off if his posture at the moment wasn't signal enough.

Stinger’s hair was a bit disheveled and he didn't have his uniform jacket on, simply his usual underclothes, his old poncho, and most notably he was barefoot. Garu almost didn't notice when honey colored eyes flicked over to stare him down, wide at first in surprise and then Stinger’s entire expression growing more guarded as he tried, and failed, to casually straighten up his posture.

“You’re outside my room.”

Garu grunted in affirmation at first on instinct before sputtering a bit as he backtracked.

“Ah! I-I mean, I just happened to be passing by-garu.”

Stinger squinted a bit at that response, before seeming to just stand and wait. A few awkward moments went by as they stared each other down before Stinger tilted his head a bit, pulling the neck of his poncho up a bit to cover his mouth better.

“You haven’t passed by yet though.”

Garu mumbled to himself in what was not quite as quiet a tone as he probably thought.

“Well, I can't just go on ahead when you look like that…”

Stinger looked at him without a word a bit longer before huffing a sigh and loving to walk on and past Garu, heading back towards the observation deck. Garu was quick to spin around and follow from a few paces behind, not wanting to just drop things where they were. Stinger was one for keeping composure, so to be caught a bit off kilter was likely something he wanted to forget; however, to be off kilter at all meant something was wrong. Stinger did not deign to give him any further looks or questions all the way to their destination, simply upon entering the room plopping himself down a little too hard on one of the chairs which had been left against the lower floor’s wall away from the table. He audibly sighed, slumping back against the wall and closing his eyes, seeming to try and recede into his poncho entirely with only the lower half of his legs and his tail drooping past the end of it.

Garu right away realized he had no excuse to be here, but maybe an excuse would make it worse? He looked around the room, trying to figure out a plan of action when an idea finally hit him. Humming a bit in satisfaction with himself, he moved to drag another of the chairs back against the wall next to Stinger’s before pulling himself up onto it. Stinger’s tail twitched at the sound of movement but otherwise he didn’t react or respond. Taking it as approval, Garu decided to act before his packmate could pull away like he was prone to.

He snaked his arm behind Stinger and firmly wrapped his paw around the other’s shoulder and pulled him to the side to fall into his lap. Stinger inhaled sharply in surprise, arms reaching out a bit too late to stop him from being pulled over to lay across the wolfman’s thighs. His tail lashed in irritation a bit and he turned from his side to have his back down so he could glare up at the blue furred ranger.

“What is this?” His tone wasn’t venomous but he wasn't going to let it happen without a word.

Garu just laughed lightly, looking down at him.

“Figured having something soft to lay on would be better on your back than the wall, you’re tired right?”

Garu couldn't see the rest of his face, but he could tell by the squint that Stinger’s face was probably scrunched up under the cloth as he weighed his options. Garu waited as patiently as he could, feeling a little squirmy under the other’s gaze so close, but eventually honey colored eyes closed. With a sigh of acceptance, Stinger shifted so his back was against Garu’s stomach and his wrapped a little awkwardly so his hand braced against Garu’s thigh but his head slotted beside his bicep to still rest directly on the other’s lap.

Stinger paused after settling, taking in that there truly was a bit of a… give to his current pillow. ‘That must be his fur flattening under his clothes,’ he thought to himself before pulling his legs tighter up and together to rest on the mostly abandoned chair he had first taken. He stiffened up again as he felt Garu move, but it was simply to rest a paw against his tibia to keep him from slipping and his other paw around to his shoulder.

Garu was warm, warmer than most people and certainly warmer than the easily chilled scorpion man, and his grip was sure on him. He didn't feel at all like he’d fall or be dislodged anytime soon, and…well, it would be a lie to say it wasn't comfortable even with the awkward positioning. It wouldn’t hurt to just….for a little bit anyhow….

Garu wasn’t the most patient of people, but this wasn't something he thought of as trying his patience and attention. He was on duty protecting a member of his pack, a job he took with utmost seriousness and dedication. Besides, if he had a tail he would most certainly be wagging it in joy at the fact he’d earned the trust of the other to be comfortable to allow this. Be it his more animal than humanoid body, or something more personal and closer to the heart, he was happy Stinger could rest easier with someone standing guard and giving warmth. Garu would wait however long it took for their poison star to rest and wake on his own, and he wouldn't move a moment sooner.

Stinger is the only one left from the Sasori System, and though recent it was not a place many other's had experience with nor with it's people.
