Cryptid Aesthetics [2/?]: Bigfoot/Sasquatch

Supposedly a simian-like creature that inhabits forests, the term “sasquatch” is an Anglicized derivative of the Halkomelem word “sásq'ets”.  “Wild men" stories found among the Pacific Northwest coastal Indian tribes can be confidently related to Bigfoot and correspond to the areas where white Americans have reported sightings.  Similar accounts and legends are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Individuals claiming to have seen Bigfoot describe it as a large, hairy, muscular, bipedal ape-like creature, roughly 6–9 feet tall, and covered in hair described as black, dark brown, or dark reddish.  Some descriptions include details such as large eyes, a pronounced brow ridge, and a large, low-set forehead.  The top of the head has been described as rounded and crested, similar to the sagittal crest of the male gorilla.  The creature has been reported as having a strong, unpleasant smell.

The enormous footprints for which the creature is named are claimed to be as large as 24 inches long and 8 inches wide.  Some footprint casts have also contained claw marks.

Proponents of Bigfoot’s existence claim that the creature is omnivorous and mainly nocturnal.

Cryptid Aesthetics [6/?]: Giant Octopi

Tales of giant octopi appear in seafaring cultures worldwide, with similar accounts found in Māori, Caribbean, European, and Japanese folklore. 

The kraken is first described as a creature dwelling of the coasts of Norway and Greenland by Erik Pontoppidan around 1752, though an account of a beast similar to the kraken appear in Icelandic poetry as early as the 13th century.  Carl Linnaeus mentions the creature in his 1735 taxonomy. In 1802, Pierre Dénys de Montfort recognized the existence of the kraken in an encyclopedia of mollusks.

The Akkorokamui is a gigantic octopus which supposedly lurks in Funka Bay in Hokkaidō.  In 1901, John Batchelor describes the account given to him of Ainu fisherman attacked by the creature.  Described as being 120 meters long, emitting an ink-like substance, and having the ability to regenerate amputated limbs, the creature has become a revered part of Shinto tradition.

The St. Augustine Monster is the name given to a large carcass, thought to be the remains of a gigantic octopus, that washed ashore on the Florida coast in 1896.

Similarities may be drawn to Giant Squids and Colossal Squids, both of which are confirmed extant species.

An unidentified flying object or UFO is defined as any perceived object in the sky not identifiable by standard criteria. However, the term is widely used for claimed observations of extraterrestrial spacecraft.

Early reported sightings of unknown flying saucers usually described them as silver or metallic, sometimes reported as covered with navigation lights or surrounded with a glowing light, hovering or moving rapidly, either alone or in tight formations with other similar craft, and exhibiting high maneuverability.  While disc-shaped flying objects have been interpreted as being sporadically recorded since the  Middle Ages, the first recorded use of the term “flying saucer” for an unidentified flying object was to describe a probable meteor that fell over Texas and Oklahoma on June 17, 1930.  The highly publicized sighting by Kenneth Arnold on June 24, 1947, resulted in the popularity of the term by U.S. newspapers.

Famous UFO sightings include the 1947 Roswell incident in New Mexico.  The 1961 case of Betty and Barney Hill, as well as the 1957 case of Antônio Vilas-Boas, were among the first alien abduction stories to receive widespread attention.

The United States Air Force facility commonly known as Area 51 is a highly classified remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. The base’s current primary purpose is publicly unknown; however, the intense secrecy surrounding the base, together with reports of unusual phenomena, have led Area 51 to become a focus of modern UFO and other conspiracy theories. Some of the activities mentioned in such theories at Area 51 include the storage, examination, and reverse engineering of crashed alien spacecraft, the study of or meetings with extraterrestrials, and the manufacture of aircraft based on alien technology.
